"Dybala dumped by Munich after prime years, Dybala targets Euro2024"... KIM angry at confidence pushed to bench
Eric Dier (30, Bayern Munich), who 'pushed Kim Min-jae to the bench', is looking higher. He dreams of playing for his country. He has his sights set on Euro2024.
Germany's 'Bavarian Footballworks' reported on Wednesday (June 13), "Dyer's best days were behind him. He was sold to Munich for a reduced fee, but has established himself as a first-choice center back with Matthias der Licht. He wants to play at Euro2024," the report said.
Dier joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in January. It was an unexpected opportunity for the former Spurs benchwarmer, who had become a five-option center back under manager Enzi Postecoglou.
It was a six-month loan, but Dier quickly made the move permanent. He was unexpectedly favored by Thomas Tuchel, who made him a full transfer option early on, pushing Kim Min-Jae to the bench.
Dyer has since established himself as a regular starter at Der Licht. By the middle of the season, he had started 15 games in a row, pushing the controversial Kim Min-Jae to the bench.
"Obviously I want to be in the England squad, I want to be at that level and I believe I'm at that level," Dyer told the podcast The Overlap recently.
Dyer added: "I haven't spoken to Gareth Southgate at all. But if I try to do the best I can for the club, then the next decision is out of my hands."
Dyer is also a two-time World Cup veteran, having represented the Three Lions at both the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. But after coming on as a substitute in the round of 16 in Qatar, he hasn't been called upon by Southgate in over a year.
Still, he was full of confidence. "I'm not going to say I haven't had any setbacks since the World Cup, but I'm playing the best football of my career since Antonio Conte," Dyer declared.
Dier added: "I'm in Munich, and I showed it. People think I'm 37 years old, but I'm 30. I'm not at the end of my prime. "If you look at Moussa Dembele, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Hugo Llorente, Hugo Lloris, they played their best football at Tottenham when they were 31, 32," he added.
However, it's unclear if Dyer will be called upon by Southgate. England already have a number of quality central defenders in John Stones, Kyle Walker, Joe Gomez, Ezri Consa, Harry Maguire, Lewis Dunk, and Jared Branswaite.
It's hard to know if Dyer is really good enough to make the England squad, and while he's been a consistent starter for Munich, he's not without his weaknesses. Against Dortmund on March 31, he was unable to prevent his side's 0-2 defeat, as his slow running, narrow defensive range, and vulnerability under pressure were exposed. It was the first time in a decade that Munich had lost to Dortmund at home in league play.
Dier was a regular in the national team a few years ago, making 49 appearances for the national team.
His close friend and England teammate Harry Kane (Munich) has also backed Dyer, telling The Sun: "He needs to continue his form now. England manager Southgate knows what he can do and it would be great to see him playing at the highest level," Kane said.
