Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is renowned for its lush landscapes, serene lakes, and vibrant culture. Among its many attractions, one stands out for its unique blend of tradition and modernity: Shillong Teer. This archery-based lottery game, deeply rooted in the local culture, captivates both locals and visitors with its mystique and excitement.

Origins and Historical Significance

Shillong Teer has its origins in the traditional practices of the Khasi tribe, one of the indigenous communities of Meghalaya. Archery has always been a significant part of Khasi culture, initially used for hunting and defense. Over time, it evolved into a community sport and eventually took on a new dimension as a lottery game. Officially recognized by the Meghalaya government in the early 1980s, Shillong Teer quickly became a popular pastime, reflecting the community’s ingenuity in blending tradition with contemporary elements.

How the Game is Played

Shillong Teer is held every day except Sunday at the Polo Grounds in Shillong. The game consists of two rounds of archery. In each round, 50 archers, all members of the Khasi Hills Archery Sports Association, shoot arrows at a target made of hay. The first round starts at 3:45 PM, and the second round follows at 4:45 PM.

The number of arrows shot in each round varies but usually ranges between 700 and 2,000. After the archers finish shooting, the arrows that hit the target are counted. The last two digits of the total number of arrows that hit the target in each round determine the winning numbers.

The Lottery Aspect

Before the archery sessions begin, participants can purchase tickets and place bets on the number of arrows that will hit the target. The numbers range from 00 to 99. The winning numbers are the last two digits of the total count of arrows hitting the target. For instance, if 1,245 arrows hit the target in the first round, the winning number for that round would be 45. The results are declared shortly after each round, and winners receive their payouts based on their bets.

Cultural and Economic Impact

Shillong Teer is more than just a game; it’s a cultural event that fosters community spirit. It brings people together, offering them a chance to engage in a traditional activity while testing their luck. The game also has significant economic implications. It generates substantial revenue, which supports various local welfare activities and development projects. Additionally, it provides employment opportunities for many, from ticket sellers to those involved in organizing the daily sessions.

The Mystique and Superstition

One of the most fascinating aspects of Shillong Teer is the element of mystique and superstition surrounding it. Many participants rely on dreams, numerology, and other traditional methods to predict the winning numbers. Dream interpretation is particularly popular, with people often consulting dream books to translate their nocturnal visions into potential winning numbers.
