Korean Athletic Director 2nd Qualification Report... Shin Tae-yong Passes - Kim Sang-sik and Kim Pan-gon Tearful

The second round of Asian qualifying for the FIFA Confederations Cup North America 2026 wrapped up on Wednesday (June 12) with a mixed bag for Korean coaches leading foreign national teams.

While Indonesia coach Shin Tae-yong smiled as he led his team to its first-ever final qualification, Vietnam coach Kim Sang-sik and Malaysia coach Kim Pan-gon tasted elimination.

Indonesia recorded a 2-0 victory over the Philippines in their final Group F match of the second qualifying round at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Nov. 11.

With the win, Indonesia finished with three wins, one draw, and two losses (10 points), finishing second behind group leader Iraq (18 points).

It is the first time Indonesia has advanced to the knockout stage of the World Cup.

Shin Tae-yong laughed, but Vietnam's coach Kim Sang-sik, who was in the same group, cried.

With Indonesia advancing to face Iraq, Vietnam's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup were dashed before their final match against Iraq on Wednesday.

After a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the fifth game against the Philippines on June 6, Kim Sang-sik, who made his debut, was hoping for a dramatic turnaround, 토토사이트 but there was no miracle, and the team lost 1-3 against Iraq, leaving them to look forward to the next round.

Malaysia's Kim Pang Gon was also disappointed.

Despite a 3-1 win in their final Group D match against Chinese Taipei on Nov. 11, they slipped down the standings after Kyrgyzstan, their second-place rival, drew 1-1 with Oman on Dec. 12.

Malaysia's final record is three wins, one draw and two losses (10 points), while Kyrgyzstan has three wins, two draws and one loss (11 points), one point ahead of Kim Pan Gon Ho.

South Korea, meanwhile, have yet to find a successor to former coach Jürgen Klinsmann (Germany), who resigned in February after a poor showing at the AFC Asian Cup 2023, and have been led by interim coaches Hwang Sun-hong and Kim Do-hoon for two consecutive qualifiers, but have managed to qualify unbeaten.

In particular, in the June A match under Kim Do-hoon, the team secured top spot in the group with two straight wins over Singapore (7-0) and China (1-0).

The result also secured South Korea's top seed.

South Korea, ranked 23rd in the FIFA rankings, won both of its June World Cup qualifiers to secure the No. 3 spot among AFC member nations in this month's rankings, joining Japan and Iran as the top seeds for the third round.

The draw for the third qualifying round, which will determine six of Asia's 8.5 tickets to the finals, will take place on July 27 at AFC Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The third qualifying round will begin in September and run until June next year, with six teams divided into three groups of six to determine first and second place.

The six teams finishing first and second in each group will advance directly to the World Cup, while the six teams finishing third and fourth in each group will be divided into two groups of three teams for the fourth qualifying round.

The two top-ranked nations from these groups will advance to the World Cup, and the two second-place finishers from the fourth qualifier will play a playoff (fifth qualifier) to determine one team for the intercontinental playoffs.
