Are you planning to come to Dubai to study? Well, you will need a valid IELTS score. Dubai is among those few countries that accepts a score of 5.5 band score. Apart from the minimum requirement for the IELTS exam in Dubai, there are a few things to note if you want to score well on the test and successfully obtain your visa.

Understanding the IELTS Exam for Dubai Visa

Before beginning the intensive exam preparation process, gaining insight into how one's performance will be evaluated can help guide study efforts and establish realistic aims. The IELTS scoring structure provides transparency regarding assessment criteria, an important consideration for optimizing exam strategies. Here are a few things to know about the exam:

  1. There are four sections of the exam, and all four of them are scored out of 40 marks. These scores make up what the exam calls, “raw scores.”
  2. Then all the scores of the four sections will be added together, then divided by four, to reach a number that number should be assigned to a band. The band is 1-9 for IELTS, with 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest one can score on the exam.
  3. Different raw scores are associated with band scores. Say you score anywhere between 39 to 40, then your band score will be 9, for raw scores between 37 and 38, you will be awarded 8.5 and so on. You can check the list on the IELTS website to get a better understanding of the bands associated with raw scores.
  4. Scores are rounded off to the nearest bands. Here’s an example to illustrate this: on the off chance that you score 6.25, it will be rounded off to the nearest half-band, which is 6.5. If you score 5.25, then it will be rounded off to 5.5. The same is the case for scores with “.75” in the end because they will be rounded off to the next whole band. For example, if you score 6.75, then you will be awarded 7.
  5. There is no minimum band requirement to successfully pass the exam. However, the organisations or universities you’re applying to may have a minimum band requirement, which you will have to attain for successful applications and visas.

Some Preparation Tips for the IELTS Exam in Dubai

Go over your mock tests, results, notes and study materials before the exam day to refresh what you’ve imbibed during your study sessions. Whether you find a trainer to help you or you’re self-studying, mock tests will give you a clear idea of the exam, the structure and the time slots.

Additionally, you will gain confidence by doing these, making your exam day easier for you.  Before your exam day, familiarise yourself with the scoring systems, and the band score you expect from yourself and go over section-by-section time slots.
