The 2021 French Open, Roland Garros, postponed by one week. Starts 30th of May

The French Tennis tournament, which normally takes place May-June every year has been delayed again for the second time(year) because of Covid-19.
Last year, the tournament was delayed by 4 months and was held in September – October with just about 1000 spectators.

The weather was so bad that most of the matches were played at Midnight.

This year the French open was formally scheduled to start on Monday 24th of May but has now be postponed to start on the 30th of May. Hoping that more fans will be able to attend.

With this new Roland Garros date, there will only be 2 weeks break between the French Open Final and the starting date of Wimbledon.

Many of the tennis players are not happy with the change and French female tennis player Alize Cornet.

She publicly criticized the French sports Minister, Roxana Maracineanu, when interviewed after her 2nd round win at the WTA, saying,
“It stays between us but our sports minister is a disaster.

“I’m sorry, I have nothing against her but she only takes bad decisions for sport like she doesn’t care. And I know it comes from the government, I’m pretty sure.

“It might come also from the tournament because I heard they might have more people if they postpone for one week.

“But still, I think it’s a pretty selfish decision to be honest because the calendar is going to suffer from this postponement.”

Alizé Cornet, World #52, was eliminated on the second round of Roland Garros last year by Shuai Zhang(#39) 6-4,7-6 (7/3).
Rafael Nadal who won his 13th French Open title last year will be back this year to defend his title.
And the new sensational Iga Swiatek of Poland that won the women’s championship last year will come back to defend her title.
